Design and Construction

Construction of Sydney Tower Centrepoint Shopping Centre

The construction of Sydney Tower began in the late 1970s as part of the larger Centrepoint shopping centre project. The shopping center opened in 1972 with 52 shops, followed by the completion of the office component in 1974. Finally, in September 1981, the Sydney Tower was opened to the public, completing the complex.

Ranked as One of the Safest Buildings

Sydney Tower is not only an architectural marvel but also one of the safest buildings in the world. Its design has been engineered to withstand earthquakes and extreme wind conditions, ensuring the safety of its occupants and visitors.

Construction Process of Sydney Tower

The construction of Sydney Tower was a fascinating feat of engineering and quality construction. The tower shaft was built using pre-made individual barrel units. The turret structure, consisting of four levels, was constructed at the base of the shaft and gradually raised to the top as the work progressed.

The shaft is made up of 46 barrel units, each weighing 27 tonnes. These units were brought to the site in seven pieces and welded together. Once the first three sections were in place, a gantry crane was erected to hoist the remaining barrel units.

The shaft also contains fire stairs, electrical and plumbing ducts, and lift shafts. Finally, the spire was erected in two parts, with the top section being lifted onto the bottom section.
